Exhibition Text
"Spider man Washing a dog," is based on the Saturday evening post magazine cover by Norman Rockwell. What I had intended with this negative illustration is creating a sad mood with the connection between the dog and Spider man.
Planning
Artistic Inspiration
Norman Rockwell
As I was contemplating on what to create for my illustration I had decided to go through Norman Rockwell's collection of magazine covers from the 1900's. As I was researching I found that most of his work was produced during 1915- 1963 for the Saturday Evening Post. I also learned that his artworks are very realistic and highly detailed. Which is why I had took on the challenge to create this piece in a more modern form. What I had took from this piece is the form of the dog and the boy, although I kept the dog and changed who the person was. I wanted to take a more modern figure and put it in the place of the post boy. I had used Spider-man for that. To make the piece more negative I created a darker tone in Spider-man's face and made the dog's face expression sad for being bathed.
I had also considered the movement of Realism to connect to Norman Rockwell's artwork and part of what I had wanted to accomplish. The Realism movement started in the 1840's and had ended in the 1880's. The initial goal these artists had was to change the way of constituted art . And make the work to be as if it were daily scenes during that time of an choatic era. |

Ethan Castillo
I had found man Spider-man drawings that were comic like and consisted of great detail. Although in particular i had found Castillo's work very detail in the muscles and was inspired to re-create the same effect. I had did a long study on the human figure within certain positions and had not found very much with the similar position as the post boy's in Norman Rockwell's September post. In Castillo's work the colors he used with his colored pencils had given me the opportunity to make the same color tones. Although I didn't have enough of reds so I had to make my red tones lighter with a white colored pencil and darker with a black colored pencil.

Meaning
With my negative piece I had wanted to create a modern and more gory feel to the illustration which is why I had included Spider-man and brought in darker tones. I had also referenced a more realistic photo of Spider-man in order to include the Norman Rockwell feel to the illustration. To include the overall theme I had use a perception of the drawing to tell a story, as if it was a scene in a movie or show. So the "viewpoint," of this drawing is to show an outsider's view, but still showing emotion within the piece.

Process
Brainstorming
Sketch #1-
In my first Sketch I had not necessarily developed the concept of me drawing Spider-man, but had the idea that it's what I was bringing in. At first I had practiced just drawing with multiple granite pencil's to see how it would look just black and white. I then had decided to do details with just colored pencil's to see how it would develop. Although it made it harder for me to create darker tones when doing so and had thought it was best if I layer the colored pencils over the granite.
Sketch #2-
For my second sketch I only used colored pencils to create the detailing on Spider-man's suit and only focused on creating that part. I had kept going back in to fix and create more shadows in my liking.
Sketch #3-
When I was creating the dog I used more cooler tones to create shadows. Although I didn't follow through with the concept because of Spider-man's suit, which would have created a blob of over-used blue's. Although I was going to use this because of my last project, which was my self-portrait. Where I used blue shadows.
Sketch #4-
For my last sketch I had only wanted to sketch a hand just to practice the movement of flow.

Step-by-step of Illustration
Step #1-
I had sketched out everything that I was going to include in my drawing from highlights to shadows. Step #2- Although once I laid down all of my shadows and highlights I right away went over the graphite pencil and started to lay my different colors on top. If the highlight wasn't visible enough I had went in with a white eraser to clean up it up. Step #3- The process of making clear enough of shadows had been a little bit of a difficulty for me. Although I had used yellows and greens to make the highlights and shadows in the dog's fur to pop out instead of being too blended in. Step #4- When I was doing the shadows and highlights for Spider-man's mask I had used Black, Red, and White to create the form of his head. Although when I blended with the white it was more of a pick color, which is when I had went back in with the main red I had used in the mask. Step #5- Creating the water was very simple because since I had laid my graphite pencil first I used white to blend and create a water texture on the "floor," of the illustration. Step #6- After I was finished with the piece I added a very light black water color to the background to create a scenery piece feel to the illustration. |

Skills and Techniques
Some skills I had developed while following through with this project is that I had developed a sense of logic when it came to the blue's and red's in Spider-Man's suit. For Spider-Man's legs I sketched out with graphite pencil of the shadows and highlights that I had wanted to show. As I choose the colors to use for that part of his legs, I was using this dark, yet vibrant blue for my darker shadows. When it came to making the shadows that were closer to the dog and Spider-Man's upper thigh, I used a black colored pencil to darken the blue and essentially blend the blue and black to create the shadowy tone.
Compare & Contrast
Looking at Norman Rockwell’s piece I had decided to use his Realism and the form that is performed by the boy and the dog. However I decided to add a modern day character and make the mood of the piece to be negative. You can see in both my piece and Rockwell’s that the dog and position is still the same. Although in place of the post boy is Spider-Man. I chose Spider-Man because of how the character is very common in modern day society. Yet, instead of using him in a heroic sense as he is most likely known as. I used him to be angry with the dog as he was washing him.
I had used Castillo's mainly because of the way he portrayed his heavy shadows ans light highlights. Although Castillo had used marker for his work which is why his work is presented that way. Although aside from the fact that I used colored pencil, I had used a lighter way to cast shadows and didn't have as heavy of muscles.

Reflection
Overall I believe what I had took away from making this negative piece was to enhance and develop my critical and logical thinking. As I was drawing I had to study and draw body movements to make sure that my drawing was correct within its state. Not only I had to study human movements and muscles, I had to look at dogs as well. Although when creating the fur I used some odd colors to justify how much I wanted the colors to show more visibly. Although I feel as if I could have went back in to lighten up some parts of this piece to sharpen the suits texture. I could tell that it was starting to get hidden by the color and shadows.
Experimentation
During the process of coloring I found that I had to lay down my colors such as, when I was doing the blue parts of the upper chest in the suit. I would lay my black lines down, go over lightly with red and would go back in to make my shadows. Although what I had done in Spider-man's mask was a different technique. I would still lay down the black lines, but instead of going over lightly all over, I colored each sqaure. Although this made the red darker, in which caused the mask to be too dark.

ACT Responses
What is the overall approach ( point of view) the author has regard to the topic of your inspiration?
The overall point of view the author has of my inspiration is giving information to the viewer of who, what, and why my inspiration came to be.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc, while you researched your inspiration?
The kind of generalizations I had discovered over the people I had researched for my inspiration is that the artists I had included are very divergent from one another. They are also from different time periods and perform different styles of work.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme around my research had been revolved around the Realism movement because the shadows and details had been to try and overall achieve
a realistic piece.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
While reading my research I had made inferences on the movements and what they depict or are categorized by. Since I did not to make the central idea of my movement I had only added small facts that support my artist.
